One of the last conferences before starting the retreat was ‘in house’.
Nick Austin shared with us his work on one of the essential tools of Ignatian Spirituality, the Examen of Conscience. His main concern is how to find the balance between reflection on spiritual experience, representing a more passive and interior element, and practice as an active side of the spirituality.
Emphasizing one over the other either leads to a passive approach to the spiritual life, or, on the other side, a rigid and lifeless asceticism. When they are in a delicate balance, we can find the way forward guided by the Spirit. The most immediate effect of Nick’s lecture on us was an increased desire deepen our practice of the Examen in our Jesuit way of life, while Nick got himself an invitation to offer the same conference for the Tertians next year.
