The Tertians are currently away from Dublin. They are spending some time in pastoral settings until Easter, when they return to the Tertianship for the concluding phase of their Tertianship experience.
Last week we were blessed with the visit of Antoine Kerhuel, Fr. General’s Assistant for Western Europe. He described how the beginning of Pope Francis’s pontificate has inspired the Society of Jesus to follow Ignatius’s charism even more faithfully, and encouraged Jesuits in their efforts to live ‘for the greater glory of God’. This week Brendan Callaghan from the British Province was our guest. For two days he helped us to continue to reflect on the religious vows, in this case that of chastity. As well as some input on psycho-sexual development and maturity, we also considered some ‘case studies’ relevant to the celibate life. Being in a circle of good friends, with Brendan’s gentle wisdom, we found ourselves in a good context to deepen our understanding of the vow of chastity in its contemplative, relational and apostolic dimensions.
At the beginning of this week, we hosted Brian O’Leary SJ, an Irish Jesuit who has dedicated a good part of his life to the study of the Jesuit Constitutions. Brian pointed out the centrality of Mission to Jesuit spirituality: although this is only the theme of Part VII of the Constitutions, it is really the fulcrum around which everything else revolves. Despite some pretty stormy weather, Mirek, Stefano, Hector and George enjoyed the gracious hospitality of the Jesuit community in Galway City and had the opportunity to visit the spectacular Cliffs of Moher as well as parts of Connemara.
